To measure the diameters of MxG stems automatically, a vision-based diameter sensor was developed, consisting of a camera and a laser sheet that was slanted downward at a 15 angle. The laser sheet projected Illuminated Line Segments (ILSs) onto the MxG stems, creating detectable features in images that enabled the depth from the camera to the stems and, subsequently, the stem diameters to be measured. To evaluate the method in a sample of 1364 MxG stems, originating from 100 randomly selected images, the depths and diameters of 150 stems were measured manually and plotted versus their automatically measured counterparts. Straight lines with intercept were fitted to both the depth and diameter data. The depth measurements, ranging from 368 to 1486 mm, yielded a slope of 1.002, an intercept of 1.2 mm and a coefficient of determination of 0.998. The diameter data, ranging from 3.1 to 14.6 mm, yielded a slope of 0.845, an intercept of 1.4 mm and a coefficient of determination of 0.926. a 2011 IAgrE. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Nitrogen Fertilization Effects on Biomass Production and Yield Components of Miscanthus ×giganteus

Grasses such as Miscanthus ×giganteus and Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) can potentially be used to produce bioenergy on a large scale in the Midwestern USA. The biomass productivity of these warm-season perennial grasses, particularly M. × giganteus, can be substantial, even when grown with limited inputs. The literature, however, varies regarding the nitrogen requirements for M. ×giganteus bi...

Characterization of chilling-shock responses in four genotypes of Miscanthus reveals the superior tolerance of M. × giganteus compared with M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The bioenergy grass Miscanthus is native to eastern Asia. As Miscanthus uses C4 photosynthesis, the cooler temperatures experienced in much of northern Europe are expected to limit productivity. Identification of genetic diversity in chilling tolerance will enable breeders to generate more productive varieties for these cooler regions. Characterizing the temporal relationshi...

Sub-zero cold tolerance of Spartina pectinata (prairie cordgrass) and Miscanthus × giganteus: candidate bioenergy crops for cool temperate climates

Miscanthus × giganteus grown in cool temperate regions of North America and Europe can exhibit severe mortality in the year after planting, and poor frost tolerance of leaves. Spartina pectinata (prairie cordgrass), a productive C4 perennial grass native to North America, has been suggested as an alternative biofuel feedstock for colder regions; however, its cold tolerance relative to M. × giga...

Radiation capture and conversion efficiencies of Miscanthus sacchariflorus, M. sinensis and their naturally occurring hybrid M. × giganteus

Miscanthus is a rhizomatous C4 grass of great interest as a biofuel crop because it has the potential to produce high yields over a wide geographical area with low agricultural inputs on marginal land less suitable for food production. At the moment, a clonal interspecific hybrid Miscanthus × giganteus is the most widely cultivated and studied in Europe and the United States, but breeding progr...

Nuclear SSR markers for Miscanthus, Saccharum, and related grasses (Saccharinae, Poaceae)1

UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY We developed nuclear simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers for the characterization of the biomass crop Miscanthus, especially M. sacchariflorus, M. sinensis, and M. ×giganteus, and tested for cross-species amplification. • METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-nine SSR markers (di- and tetranucleotide repeats) were developed from DNA sequences obtained from 192 clones ...
